Sulfate toxicity to early life stages of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) in soft freshwater

چکیده

Sulfate occurs naturally in the aquatic environment but its elevated levels can be toxic to life freshwater environments. We investigated toxicity of sulfate humic, soft whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) from fertilization eggs hatching i.e. during critical phases early development. Anadromous Kokemäenjoki white?sh and sperm fertilization, embryos larvae were exposed long-term 175-day incubation seven different sodium (Na2SO4) concentrations 44 2 000 mg SO4 L?1. Endpoint variables success, offspring survival larval growth. Egg embryonic development most sensitive developmental stages sulfate, although success decreased only highest concentration The late period, 5-day period was high no difference between control treatments observed. LC50-values for entire 1 413 161 L?1, respectively. NOEC (No-observed Effect Concentration) both periods 207 tolerance seems on same level as other salmonids’ stages.

Temporal spawning divergence in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus)

A critical step in ecological speciation is the development of reproductive isolation. The processes leading up to reproductive isolation are difficult to study since they often occur over very long time periods. Populations of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) has gone through reticulate divergent evolution in many Scandinavian lakes during the last 10 000 years. Some populations even e...

Oral toxicity of the microcystin-containing cyanobacterium Planktothrix rubescens in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus).

The microcystin-producing cyanobacterium Planktothrix is one of the most widespread genera amongst toxin producing cyanobacteria in European lakes. In particular, the metalimnic blooms of Planktothrix rubescens have been associated with growing problems in the professional freshwater fishery as a decrease in yearly yields in the important coregonids fishery often coincides with the appearance o...

A proteomics approach reveals divergent molecular responses to salinity in populations of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus).

Osmoregulation is a vital physiological function for fish, as it helps maintain a stable intracellular concentration of ions in environments of variable salinities. We focused on a primarily freshwater species, the European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying salinity tolerance and examine whether these mechanisms differ between genetically simila...

Alizarin marking of whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus otoliths during egg incubation

Alizarin red S from 200 to 5000 mg L was used to mark the otoliths of whitefish embryos Coregonus lavaretus (L.) from 5 days after fertilization until shortly before hatching, to develop a method for evaluating the effect of stocking whitefish. Mark quality depended on developmental stage at the time of immersion. The best results were obtained when the otolith primordia had formed and had star...

Parallel and non-parallel morphological divergence among foraging specialists in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus)

Parallel phenotypic evolution occurs when independent populations evolve similar traits in response to similar selective regimes. However, populations inhabiting similar environments also frequently show some phenotypic differences that result from non-parallel evolution. In this study, we quantified the relative importance of parallel evolution to similar foraging regimes and non-parallel lake...
